On our mountains, between 1,000 and 2,000 m, a shrubby plant with a highly ecological and nutritional value for the Marsican bear grows up. It is the alpine buckthorn (Rhamnus alpina), which lives in the screes and in areas with a strong rocky prevalence, and which bears fruit at the end of summer by producing small blackish berries. As happens often in nature, plants and animals derive mutual benefit from interaction: the bears (but also other animals) feed on the alpine buckthorn berries by benefitting a significant caloric intake and the plant is disseminated far from its growing area through the bear’s excrements that contain its seeds.
