Following a lobbying action from SLO, Altura, LIPU and the Stazione Ornitologica Abruzzese, the Environmental Impact Assessment Committee of the Abruzzo Region decided that in 2022 the military activities carried out by the Alpini on Monte Stabiata will only be able to take place without the use of firearms and off-road vehicles. A limit of 50 people was also imposed for carrying out the activities.
Located in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, Mount Stabiata is a feeding and nesting site for many species of birds, some of which are protected at Community level. Salviamo l’Orso members think that a protected area should not be used in general for these exercises also in consideration of the existence of alternative sites in non-protected sites. In any case, it is necessary to impose the restoration of habitats, contaminated with heavy metals and threatened by the utilization of off-road vehicles.
