Expert report and legal procedure updates

17 Settembre 2023 | Non categorizzato

Two weeks after the death of Amarena, the first results of the ballistic report were made public, confirming that the bear was on all fours when she was hit in the side by the bullet. We are expecting the full ballistics report, which around mid-December will shed light on the distance and trajectory of the bullet.

In the meantime, in early September the law firm that represents Salviamo l’Orso and the WWF filed a complaint with the Avezzano Public Prosecutor’s Office and the territorial and Carabinieri Forestali stations in charge of the territory of San Benedetto dei Marsi. This step will enable us to bring a civil action in the future trial, in the almost certain event that the defendant will be indicted.

Our goal will be to obtain adequate compensation for the damage caused to the individual of a critically endangered species, heritage of the entire Abruzzo and national community.

We would like to emphasise that, thanks to the wave of solidarity that swept over us after Amarena’s death, your donations have exceeded €10,000, which will give us a big hand in covering legal costs.

Raising our hopes for a fair trial, an increase of the penalty and fine for killing a Marsican brown bear was approved on the 21st of September. Anyone who kills, captures or keeps a Marsican bear faces 6 months to 2 years imprisonment and a fine of €4,000 to €10,000. We believe that this is not enough, but just a step forward.
