Between mid-September and the end of October, Salviamo l’Orso and Rewilding Apennines were particularly committed to protecting livestock farms and apiaries from raids by a Marsican bear in the Municipality of Gioia dei Marsi. 26 stables were secured through the installation of 12 electric fences and 17 bear-proof metal doors. The interventions involved the staff of Rewilding Apennines, a local blacksmith and 5 Salviamo l’Orso’s volunteers for a total of 650 hours of work and a cost of around € 15,000. All this would not have been possible without the support of our members and the contribution of foreign partners such as Rewilding Europe, The Nature Trust and Aispa. Although the protection of all the farms was not possible due to lack of funds, the preventive measures proved once again effective, dissuading the bear from frequenting the town. We thank the citizens of Gioia for their tolerance towards the bear and our volunteers for their commendable commitment! Our special thanks go to the municipal administration of Gioia, Mayor Gianclemente Berardini and Councilor Antonio De Ioris in the first place, for having supported us in these actions for the coexistence between local communities and large predators with a contribution of 2,000 €!
