The Marsican bear meets the Cantabrian bear

10 Novembre 2019 | Non categorizzato

Last month a dream came true. Thanks to The European Nature Trust which sponsored the trip, our board members Angela and Mario had a chance to meet the staff of Fundación Oso Pardo in Spain and share with them experiences and knowledge. FOP has been an inspiring model for SLO even before its establishment in 2012. The amazing recovery of the brown bears in the Cantabrian mountains, which now number over 330 individuals in their Western population, is what we would like to replicate in the Apennines. The way is still arduous, but the population of the Marsican brown bears, similar in size to the Eastern population in the Cantabrians, is showing a surprising vitality that would make everybody positive if human-related fatalities were not still high. SLO and FOP are both working hard to fight against these common threats and the achievements that FOP has reached so far make us confident that similar conservation actions will bring to the same results. Thank you, FOP, for your generosity and hospitality and for the amazing work you are doing for the Cantabrian bears and not only!
