Reflectors to mitigate the risk of collision with wildlife

A couple of weeks ago, the volunteers of Salviamo l’Orso and Rewilding Apennines carried out the annual maintenance of the reflectors of the SR83 Marsicana.

In total, 122 optical bollards were installed between Gioia dei Marsi and Opi, covering more than 32 km of state road in synergy with the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and the LIFE Safe-Crossing project.

The reflectors, illuminated by the light of the headlights, emit a halo of light in the surroundings, which discourages wild animals from crossing when the vehicle arrives.

These devices, combined with responsible driving, can significantly reduce the risk of road bumps. The intervention is particularly useful in areas with a high density of wild animals such as the one crossed by this road.
