On June 8, at 3:30 PM, some hikers reported the presence of a dead bear in the Chiarano-Sparvera Regional State Forest near the picnic area.
The Central operation of 112 alerted the patrol of the Forest Carabinieri of Sulmona and the Director of PNALM Luciano Sammarone, who intervened alongside the park rangers, the Veterinary Service, and the technicians of the Monte Genzana Alto Gizio Upper Regional Nature Reserve.
Initial findings indicate signs that suggest a likely bear-on-bear competition, supported by the presence of numerous bear fur clumps in the vicinity, which were collected for genetic analysis by ISPRA.
The deceased bear is an adult male of at least 10 years old.
The bear was seized by the Forest Carabinieri and park rangers, taken, and transported to the Zooprophylactic Institute of Teramo.
The actual cause of death and any possible poisoning or poaching acts will only be determined through further examinations conducted at the Veterinary Medicine Clinic of the University of Teramo and the Zooprophylactic Institute of Teramo.
We await the results in the hope that natural death will be confirmed.
